What do these abbreviations mean: WN, PL, SH, EX, TR, SU?

These are terms related to horse racing wagers.

  • WN (Win): A bettor wins by selecting a horse that finishes first.
  • PL (Place): A bettor wins by selecting a horse that finishes first or second.
  • SH (show): A bettor wins by selecting a horse that finishes first, second or third.
  • EX (exacta): A method of betting, on a horserace, in which the bettor must correctly pick those finishing in the first and second places in precisely that sequence.
  • TR (trifecta): A method of betting, on a horserace in which a bettor wins by selecting the first threes finishers of a race in the correct order of finish.
  • SU (superfecta): A variation of the perfecta on which a bettor must select the first four finishers of a race in the correct order of finish in order to win.

Note: There are certain tracks that don't offer each specific bet and the definition may vary outside the US.
